Notes from Your Acupuncturist

Fiction is nothing more than a story wrapped around the truth.

All fiction is based on some thread of truth, and mine is no different unless you think wrapping a story around a thousand threads of truth is unique.

In The Sale of An Immigrant girl, I weave the histories of women from my family tree I've uncovered as I continue my quest into my Ancestry. During the creating of America, thousands, if not millions of women, girls mostly under the age of 20, were sold to men they'd never met, never known, living in a hostile country that needed a 'waste class' of people to make way for more people to come. Millions of those first immigrants to arrive on these shores did not survive and their stories lost to time.

Growing up, my history taught me that these 'mail-order brides,' were happy to be married to a man in America. The few stories were layered with romantic nuances then swept aside to talk about grander conquests, like cowboys killing Indians.

This story is to remind us all of the sacrifices those who came before us made. It is also to remind us that no family tree is free from the loss, or the sale of, a child or family member during these chapters in our global history as humans.
